Artifact #8
Artifact #8 - Professional Interview
Program Outcome - PO7
Professional Value - PV4
This artifact was completed in the course LI801: Foundations of Library & Information Science. This course was taught by Mirah Dow and its purpose was to examine the philosophical and ethical underpinnings, roles and societal contexts, and current issues of the global information society. For this particular assignment, I was tasked with interviewing an information professional. The professional I picked was Ray Walling, a librarian from the Baker University Academic Library. Much like the artifact dealing with my reference observation, this interview gave me knowledge that I will use the rest of my career.
Ray is a great librarian and gave me honest and helpful answers to my questions. This artifact is the best example of me participating in professional development activities as outlined by PO7. Since this interview was early in my time in the MLS program, it did a lot in shaping my experience and how I view the profession. As such, this assignment meets the standard of PV4: Mentorship. Ray did a wonderful job of imparting knowledge to a future professional, and hopefully I will ensure the continued growth of the field.
Below is my reflection paper about the assignment and a quote from the instructor.

"Dylan - It is great to read that you feel you gain "confidence" as you interviewed this professional academic librarian. I wish every new MLS student could have this experience from this assignment. Your certainly gleaned a great deal from this interview in terms of practices/concepts related to the content of this course. I certainly do see you using learning from your readings to express the content of this interview."
