Artifact #7
Artifact #7 - Reference Observation and Analysis
Program Outcome - PO1, PO5
Professional Value - PV1, PV4
This artifact was completed in LI813: Reference and User Services. This course was taught by Keith Rocci and its purpose was to introduction to a wide variety of print and electronic reference sources and current issues in the provision of reference services. For this particular assignment, I was tasked with observing and analyzing a reference setting. For my observation I picked the consultation desk at the National Archives in Kansas City. The insight and knowledge I gained from that observation was invaluable because within the year I was actually staffed in a rotation that worked that desk. This assignment helped reinforce the lessons I have learned with PO1 with creating client-centered information services, but it really helped establish learning in PO5. I was able to observe a setting that handled retrieving, evaluating and synthesizing
information resources to fulfill information needs in an archival setting. It was firsthand experience that will stick with me for years. This assignment also reestablished learning in PV1: Service and PV4: Mentorship. As I was observing a very skilled reference archivists I got to witness the ideal client-centered service, the lessons were not lost on this future information professional.
Below is my reflection paper on my observation and a quote from the instructor.

"Nicely written Dylan and way to add the theory into the review."
