Artifact #4
Artifact #4 - DSpace, a Open Source Software Presentation
Program Outcomes - PO3, PO4
Professional Value - PV4
This artifact was completed in the course LI815: Information Technology. This course was taught by Kelly Fann and its purpose was to introduce the basic information technology concepts and skills necessary for library and information
professionals. For this particular assignment, I was tasked with choosing an open source software product to evaluate, analyze, review, and determine its usefulness within a library setting. The software I picked was DSpace, an open source software that is great for building digital repositories. I met the qualification of PO3 and PO4 by researching how DSpace organizes digital content and is great at providing hierarchal structure to its holdings, which is important for archival repositories. Learning and then explaining a new technology system for organizing knowledge and information resources is good skill to practice as I will most likely have to perform this task in future career settings. Presenting information on DSpace was another example of meeting the qualification of PV4: Mentorship. By presenting the information to my fellow students I was teaching current and future information professionals about relevant new software in our field.
Bel0w is my presentation and quote from the instructor.

"Great use of outside resources. This is a great final project that provides detailed information about DSpace’s uses for libraries, how it could be applied in a library setting, and identifying a great number of the advantages and disadvantages. Your presentation is thorough, concise, and comprehensive with a great listing of alternative software choices. Wonderful overall argument for using DSpace and valid caveats with the software. Very nicely done!"
